CSUN Hockey Coaching Staff
Coach Steve Gale
Steve is in his 9th season coaching the Matadors. During his time as coach the Matadors have a 121-74-7-5 record for a .613 winning percentage. Below is a list of accomplishments for the Matadors in Steve’s time with the team.
Six winning seasons, five Pacific Regional appearances, four PCHA Championship Game appearances and two ACHA National Tournament appearances.
Prior to coaching at CSUN Steve was the Head Coach of the West Valley Wolves and served on the Board of Directors. He has coached Mites through Midgets at the Iceoplex in North Hills and Jr. Kings and Jr. Ice Dogs Tier teams. Steve has won five SCAHA Championships, three CAHA State Championships, has been to the Pacific District Regionals eight times and has taken four different teams to the USA Hockey National Championships at the Pee Wee Tier II, Bantam Tier II and Midget Tier II levels.
Steve is a certified Master Level Coach with USA Hockey and was previously a certified hockey official.
During his playing career, Steve was on the first team from Southern California to play in a USA Hockey National Championship in 1971. After high school, Steve played on the Orange Coast Juniors and the Valley College Monarchs in their inaugural season. Steve then moved on to play Semi-Pro for the Tri-Valley Blackhawks and California Eagles of the old PSHL (now ECHL) as well as various advanced/elite level adult teams.
Steve has two sons, JP and Chris, and has been happily married to his wife Joyce for more than 30 years.
Coach JP Gale
JP is in his 5th season coaching the Matadors. Before becoming a coach JP played defense and was captain of the team from 2005-2010.
He played travel hockey for the West Valley Wolves for 12 years and won a World Championship in 1998 in Quebec with the Jr. Kings Pee Wee AAA team. He then played Midget AAA for the Jr. Kings from 2001-2002. JP also participated in the MAC tournament in Calgary, was a member of the 2001 Chicago Showcase team and was named Captain of the 2002 Showcase team.
Following the Jr. Kings, JP played one season of Juniors with the Bay City Bombers of the WSHL in 2002-03 and was named an Assistant Captain, Defensive Player of the Year and was named a First Team All Star. For the 2003-04 season, JP played for the Wisconsin Knights (now Wisconsin Mustangs) in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League (MJHL). He was named an Assistant Captain and an All Star for the MJHL and played in the 2003 NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
JP is a full time staff member at CSUN as the Sport Clubs Coordinator. JP received his BS in Business and is working on an MS in Sports Management.
Sean Kushner - Equipment Manager
Sean is in his 12th season as the Equipment Manager with the Matadors. Sean is a CSUN alumni with a BA and MS in Psychology.
Travis Van Noty - Radio Broadcaster
Travis is in his 8th season as the radio play-by-play broadcaster with the Matadors. Travis is a CSUN alumni with a BA in Broadcast Journalism.
Brian Melblom - PA Announcer
Brian is in his 6th season as the Public Address Announcer with the Matadors. Brian is a CSUN alumni with a BA and MA in Music.
