CSUN Hockey Coaching Staff

Coach Steve Gale

Steve is in his 7th season as the coach of the Matadors. During his time with the team the Matadors are 104-44-5-1 and have been Nationally ranked each season. Prior to coaching at Cal State Northridge, Steve was the Head Coach of the West Valley Wolves and served on the Board of Directors. He has coached Mites through Midgets (Iceoplex North Hills), Los Angeles Jr. Kings and Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs Tier teams.

Steve has lead the Matadors to the Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association Championship Game in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012, five straight Pacific Regionals appearances and has lead them to their only two ACHA National Championship appearances in 2010 and 2012. The Matadors finished 11th and 9th in the Nation out of more than 130 schools in those two years.

Steve has earned five SCAHA Championships, three CAHA State Championships, has been to the Pacific District Regionals eight times and has taken four different teams to the USA Hockey National Championships at the Pee Wee Tier II, Bantam Tier II and Midget Tier II levels.

Steve is a certified Master Level Coach with USA Hockey and was previously a certified hockey official.

During his playing career, Steve was on the first team from Southern California to play in a USA Hockey National Championship in 1971. After high school, Steve played on the Orange Coast Juniors and the Valley College Monarchs in their inaugural season. Steve then moved on to play Semi-Pro for the Tri-Valley Blackhawks and California Eagles of the old PSHL (now ECHL) as well as various advanced/elite level adult teams.

Steve has two sons, JP and Chris, and has been happily married to his wife Joyce for more than 30 years.

Coach JP Gale

JP is in his 8th season being involved with the Matadors. JP was the captain of CSUN Ice Hockey for five seasons from 2005-2010 and lead them to their first ACHA National Championship appearance in 2010. He played travel hockey for the West Valley Wolves for 12 years and won a World Championship in 1998 in Quebec, Canada with the Jr. Kings Pee Wee AAA team. He then played Midget AAA for the LA Jr. Kings from 2001-2002. JP also participated in the MAC tournament in Calgary, Canada, was a member of the 2001 Chicago Showcase team and was named Captain of the 2002 Showcase team.

Following the Jr. Kings, JP played one season of Juniors with the Bay City Bombers of the WSHL in 2002-03 and was named an Assistant Captain, Defensive Player of the Year and was named a First Team All Star. For the 2003-04 season, JP played for the Wisconsin Knights (now Wisconsin Mustangs) in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League (MJHL). He was named an Assistant Captain and an All Star for the MJHL and played in the 2003 NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.

JP began coaching as an assistant for the West Valley Wolves Pee Wee AA and Bantam AA teams. He was also an assistant coach with the AV Northerners in the Valencia High School Hockey League. JP is in his third season as a coach with CSUN.

JP is a full time staff member at CSUN as the Sport Clubs Coordinator. JP is a CSUN alumni with a BS in Business and is working on an MS in Sports Management.

Sean Kushner - Equipment Manager

Sean is in his 10th season as Equipment Manager with the Matadors. Sean is a CSUN alumni with a BA and MS in Psychology.

Travis Van Noty - Radio Broadcaster

Travis is in his 6th season as the Voice of the Matadors. Travis is a CSUN alumni with a BA in Broadcast Journalism.

Cara Ellis - Team Coordinator

Cara is in her 6th season as a Volunteer with the Matadors. Cara is a CSUN alumni with a BA in Deaf Studies.

Brian Melblom - PA Announcer

Brian is in his 4th season as the Public Address Announcer for the Matadors. Brian is a CSUN alumni with a BA in Music.
