In a dog fight of a game, the Cal. State Northridge Matadors took out the Fresno State Bulldogs 6-2 Saturday night in Fresno. With an early powerplay Josh Fields got the Matadors on the board. The second period started with a quick goal from Bulldog Jeremy Selan, but Tom Lalley came to the rescue with a wrist shot at 11:01 of the second period and the Matadors held the lead from then on. AJ Bernhardt followed with a tally of his own at 1:37 off a blast from Chris Gale. The Matadors continued to dominate the third period with Chris Gale putting on a show. Gale netted his first of the game at 18:54, followed quickly by another Gale powerplay goal at 18:04. The Bulldogs never quit though and continued to battle back and scored on the powerplay just a minute later. After an altercation between the Matador's Rory Lamb and Justin Whisten, the Matadors ended up killing a five minute major. The Bulldogs were looking to rally, but Chris Gale dealt the last blow of the game, picking the pocket of one of the Bulldog defenseman and netted a short hander. The wind quickly died in the Bulldogs sails and the Matadors coasted on to a 6-2 win. Ron Dierkes won the contest between Bulldogs Joe Ricupero and Nate Lamberty, turning away 29 or 31 shots. Northridge's biggest test of the season comes next Saturday against the red hot Wyoming Cowboys at the Valley Ice Center. Check back this week for more details. |
