The Cal. State Northridge Matadors faced a hungry CSU Sacramento Hornets Friday night in Roseville.
The first period saw strong play by the Hornets and the flu stricken Matadors struggled to find their legs.Tyler Hinz got the scoring started for Sacramento at 3:14 of the 1st period, followed quickly by Malachi Mahan at 1:43. The Matadors found themselves in the hole and fighting to get some momentum going. Chris Gale quickly got the ball rolling in the 2nd period, with a goal at 19:34. Jack Avetissian made a statement of his own four minutes later with a goal at 15:34. Despite the momentum shift, the Hornets would not back down and popped another two quick goals from Matt Price and Ray Gsell. The back and forth action continued and at 6:13 of the 2nd Chris Gale put a wrist shot past Tim Kesner to make the score 4-3. The Matadors looked to be on the attack, but again the Hornets countered by Gsell at 5:16. The Matadors headed into the locker room down 5-3 and came out flying in the 3rd period. Jack Avetissian scored his second of the night at 16:27, but Malachi Mahan of the Hornets sunk his second of the night and it looked like the Matadors were going to be out for the count with a 2 goal defecit and a little over ten minutes left to play. Jack Avetissian again answered the call for a rally and netted his third of the night at 8:09 on the powerplay. With 2:56 left in the 3rd, Matador Captain JP Gale launched a rocket from the point and beat Tim Kesner high and off the cross bar to tie the game 6-6. In overtime the Matadors took a holding penalty and went down, 4 on 3 to the Hornets. Northridge controlled the Sacramento power play and allowed 1 shot in the over time period. At 1:43 of overtime the Hornets took a tripping penalty and put the Matadors on the power play. Jack Avetissian let a shot go from the top of the circle and Chris Gale was there to put home the rebound for the hat trick and the win. It was a hard fought come back for the Matadors and a tough loss for the Hornets who battled all game. The Matadors will be taking on UC Davis tonight at Vacaville Ice Sports at 8:30 pm. |
