The #2 ranked Cal. State Northridge Matadors came out hard and were able to outlast the #3 ranked University of Colorado Buffaloes with a 5-3 victory Friday night.

With back and forth action from the drop of the puck, the Matadors looked to strike early and when CU turned over the puck in the offensive zone, the Matadors top line made them pay on a beautiful 2 on 1 play with the goal scored by Jack Avetissian from Chris Gale and Anthony Kendryna.

Colorado continued to battle throughout the first and tallied their first of the game at 14:34 of the second period. Just thirty seconds later, the Matador's Rory Lamb netted his 5th of the year and giving the Matadors the lead. Colorado's Ryan Donato netted his 20th of the season tying the game at 2-2. Shortly after the Matadors Anthony Annese took an uncalled for charging penalty on the CU goalie and the Matadors looked like they were going to be short handed, but CU's Sam Blass took a double minor for roughing and the Matadors ended up 4 on 4. Jack Avetissian scored his 17th of the season on the 4 on 4. While still on the 4 on 4, CU goalie Jeremy Jerez took a slashing penalty and the Matadors went on a 4 on 3 powerplay. Right off the face off Anthony Kendryna was able to put in a rebound off of a shot from JP Gale and the Matadors went up 4-2.

Only two minutes later, both CU and CSUN took penalties resulting in a 3 on 3. Colorado's Taylor Shilts battled past the Matador defense and was able to score putting the Buffaloes within one goal at the 1:21 mark of the 2nd period. The third period saw more hitting and gutsy plays from both teams. The Buffaloes looked like they were on the verge of making the come back, but strong play by the Northridge defense and goalie Ron Dierkes turned away the Buffalo onslaught. With 1:42 remaining in the third Colorado pulled their goalie and had numerous chances, but with the help of a post and a little luck, the Matadors were able to keep CU at bay. CU looked like they were going to convert on the 6 on 5 play, but AJ Bernhardt was able to clear the zone for the Matadors and off a forced turn over Chris Gale let a wrist shot go from the Matador blue line and sealed the game with 58 seconds left to play. Matador goalie Ron Dierkes took home the player of the game award, turning away 54 Buffalo shots.

Northridge will look to keep on winning as the regular season winds down. Next weekend the Matadors will be hosting their Back to School Blackout Weekend. Northridge will take on CSU Long Beach Friday night at 8:30 pm, Fresno State Saturday night at 8:30 pm and Northern Arizona University Sunday at 2:45 pm. Fans wearing CSUN apparel or black and red will get $1 off the price of admission.
